Located overlooking Swansea Marina and the River Tawe, it’s no surprise that one of the criteria for the glazing at the £4.1m 8-storey Crown Place student living development in Swansea was to make the most of the views.
The architects ECE Westworks achieved that with a mix of AluK SL52 curtain walling, 58BW top hung windows and fixed lights and GT55 commercial entrance doors.
Our commercial team worked closely with ECE Westworks to refine the glazing specification so that it met the requirements for student occupation as well as the waterfront location. That meant including acoustic glass throughout for reduced noise levels and Secured by Design security and safety restrictors on the windows, as well as ensuring an AluK marine grade powder coated finish on all the frames to cope easily with the coastal environment.
Our designers also carried out all the necessary wind loading calculations for the curtain walling installed at the entrance to the 8-storey development, and worked with the fabricators Denval to ensure it could be fabricated and installed efficiently and cost effectively.
Five years on from completion, the quality and durability of the AluK aluminium frames is ensuring that, even with 600+ students in the building at any one time, the finished installation is standing the test of time beautifully.
Crown Place is a 645-bedroom scheme managed by Crown Student Living and occupied by UK and international students from both Swansea University’s Singleton and Bay campuses and Trinity St David’s SA1 campus. As well as studios and multi-level cluster apartments, there are also communal areas, an on-site shop, cinema and gym.
