The Rest is a landmark Grade II listed building overlooking Rest Bay, Porthcawl, which has been carefully transformed from a historic Victorian convalescent home into a modern residential development.
The Rest in Porthcawl is an almost perfect demonstration of how successfully AluK windows and doors can be used in both Heritage and contemporary settings.
At the heart of the Rest development is an imposing Grade II listed Victorian building which was once a convalescence home for Welsh miners and their families. This grand old property has been completely refurbished and transformed into luxury holiday apartments, and a collection of contemporary, new build apartments built alongside.
Now known as The Links because it overlooks the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, the development seamlessly blends old and new, with AluK windows, sliding and bifold doors and curtain walling used consistently throughout. This helped to enforce a unified architectural language and ensure visual continuity across the scheme.
The fabricators on the project – BWM Commercial based in Pontypridd, worked closely with the architects, engineers and main contractor to ensure that the glazing installation met both the heritage and the performance requirements of the buildings.
AluK’s 58BW HI windows were approved for installation in the Victorian building primarily on the basis of the slim sightlines, which are as little as 43mm in a fixed light. Finished on the original parts of the building in pebble grey, they were also used throughout the new build elements, but here they were finished in a contrasting anthracite grey.
The durability of the powder coated paint finish was key in such an exposed coastal location and all of the frames on the project were supplied by AluK in our Qualicoat accredited ‘seaside’ finish with marine grade warranty.
As well as the 58BW window system, The Rest also features AluK sliding and bifold doors opening onto balconies and terraces to make most of the views across the golf course and the beach and our GT55 ground floor system and SL52 curtain walling system on the entrance facades.
