Ysgol Bro Dinefwr is a bilingual 1200 pupil secondary school in Fairfach, near Landeilo built by Bouygues Construction for Carmarthenshire Council. Two schools were merged into one on a single site and a sixth form centre, specialist ASD unit and additional community leisure facilities added.
Bro Dinefwyr was originally part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools programme and like several schools in the programme, it features the ever popular combination of AluK 58BW windows, GT55TB secure entrance doors and SL52 capped curtain walling.
For architects Austin Smith Lord, one of the key drivers for the design of the school was environmental sustainability, and it achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating as well an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of A.
The use of BRE A rated, 100% recyclable aluminium contributed to the BREEAM Excellence and the efficiency of AluK’s thermally broken SL52 curtain walling, GT55 doors and Part L compliant 58BW window system all played a significant part in the EPC A.
AluK’s SL52 CWCT Sequence B tested curtain walling forms the centrepiece of the double height glazed school entrance, and is also used for many of the walkways on the ground floor.
It gave architects Austin Smith Lord all the design flexibility they needed for the entrance and walkways, with consistent 50mm sightlines and a range of glazing infills, face caps, shading and integrated window options available.
Crucially for a schools setting, our tested, tried and trusted 58BW window system and high secure GT55 doors are all Secured By Design accredited and, when the school was officially opened, the head teacher received not just a ceremonial key but a Secured by Design certificate as well.
